# Affiliate Application > Learn what an affiliate application is, what to ask applicants, how approval and rejection work, and when to screen affiliates instead of using open enrollment. - URL: https://growsurf.com/glossary/affiliate-application/ --- [← View All Terms](/glossary/) An affiliate application is the form a prospective partner submits to join an affiliate program that screens its members. The program owner reviews it and approves or rejects the applicant before they can earn commissions. Not every affiliate program lets anyone join. Many ask prospective partners to apply first, then review each application before handing out an [affiliate link](/glossary/affiliate-link/). The application is where the program learns who the partner is, where they plan to promote, and whether they are a fit for the brand. ### Why Programs Screen Applicants Open enrollment gets you more affiliates. Screening gets you better ones. Programs add an application step for a few reasons: - **Brand fit:** A finance product does not want its name on coupon spam sites. A review step lets you check the applicant's site, audience, and content before they represent you. - **Fraud prevention:** Self-referrals, fake accounts, and cookie stuffing are easier to stop at the door than to claw back later. See [affiliate fraud](/glossary/affiliate-fraud/). - **Compliance:** Regulated industries often need to know exactly who is promoting them and where. - **Support load:** A smaller group of engaged partners generates fewer tickets than a large pool of inactive signups. ### What an Application Asks For Keep it short. A good application collects only what you need to make a decision: - Name, email, and company or brand - Website, newsletter, or social channels, with rough audience size - How they plan to promote you (content, paid ads, email, community) - Which of your products or plans they intend to focus on - Agreement to your [affiliate agreement](/glossary/affiliate-agreement/) and disclosure rules Anything beyond that lowers completion. If you need tax details or payout information, collect them after approval during [affiliate onboarding](/glossary/affiliate-onboarding/). ### The Review Process Once submitted, an application sits in a pending state. The program owner or [affiliate manager](/glossary/affiliate-manager/) reviews it and either approves the applicant, which unlocks their links and portal, or rejects them with a short reason. Some programs auto-approve every application and simply keep the answers on file, which gives them the information without the delay. Programs can also skip the form entirely for partners they already know. A direct invite enrolls a trusted partner without an application. ### Open Enrollment vs. Application-Based Programs | | Open enrollment | Application-based | | --- | --- | --- | | Who gets in | Anyone who signs up | Applicants you approve | | Speed to first promotion | Immediate | After review | | Partner quality | Mixed | Higher, more consistent | | Best for | Consumer products, large audiences | B2B, regulated, premium brands | ### Best Practices - Publish your acceptance criteria on your [affiliate landing page](/glossary/affiliate-landing-page/) so weak applicants self-select out. - Decide within a few business days. Applicants who wait a month promote someone else. - Tell rejected applicants why, in one sentence. Some will fix the issue and reapply. - Invite partners you already want instead of hoping they find the form. ## Related Terms [Affiliate Onboarding Affiliate onboarding is the process of welcoming, educating, and equipping new affiliates with the tools, knowledge, and resources they…](/glossary/affiliate-onboarding/) [Affiliate Agreement An affiliate agreement is a legal contract between a merchant and an affiliate that defines the terms and conditions of their partnership,…](/glossary/affiliate-agreement/) [Affiliate Landing Page An affiliate landing page is the public page that explains an affiliate program to prospective partners and lets them apply or sign up. Applicants apply from your hosted affiliate program homepage through a short, one-question-at-a-time form with a review step before they submit. A half-finished application is saved as a draft. You review each application from your dashboard, approve or reject it, and GrowSurf emails the applicant your decision. Approved affiliates get their tracking links and portal access right away. For partners you already trust, send an enrollment invite that skips the application entirely. Applications can also be listed and managed through the REST API. ## Related Blog Posts ### [Top 5 Affiliate Software Tools in 2026 for Marketers](/blog/affiliate-software-tools/) Affiliate software tools make all the difference to a sophisticated, efficient and profitable affiliate marketing program. Name, contact details, where the applicant will promote you, roughly how large their audience is, and how they plan to promote. Ask for agreement to your terms. Leave tax and payout details for onboarding after approval. #### Should I approve every affiliate? No. Approve partners whose audience overlaps with your customers and whose content you would be comfortable putting your name on. Reject coupon-only sites, empty accounts, and applicants who cannot describe how they will promote you. #### How long should the review take? Aim for two to three business days. Applicants who hear nothing for weeks assume the program is dead and move on. #### What is the difference between open enrollment and an application-based program? Open enrollment lets anyone join and start promoting immediately. An application-based program makes people apply first and only activates the ones you approve. Open enrollment maximizes reach; applications maximize partner quality. ## Unlock the power of word-of-mouth marketing and deepen your bond with customers Set up your refer a friend program with customer referral and affiliate program software that lowers your acquisition costs, increases customer loyalty, and saves you gobs of time.
