# Commission Reversal > A commission reversal cancels an affiliate commission after a refund, chargeback, or fraud. Learn how reversals, clawbacks, and holding periods work. - URL: https://growsurf.com/glossary/commission-reversal/ --- [← View All Terms](/glossary/) A commission reversal cancels an affiliate commission that was already recorded, usually because the sale behind it was refunded, charged back, or found to be fraudulent. The amount is removed from the affiliate's pending or upcoming payout. An [affiliate commission](/glossary/affiliate-commission/) is earned when a referred customer buys. If that purchase is later undone, the commission is undone with it. That is a commission reversal, and every affiliate program needs a clear policy for it. ### Why Commissions Get Reversed - **Refunds:** The customer returns the product or cancels inside the refund window. - **Chargebacks:** The customer disputes the charge with their bank. - **Cancelled trials and subscriptions:** A subscription that never converts past the trial, or is cancelled before the first renewal, often does not qualify. - **Fraud:** Self-referrals, stolen cards, fake accounts, or coupon abuse. See [affiliate fraud](/glossary/affiliate-fraud/). - **Duplicate or invalid orders:** The same purchase recorded twice, or a lead that fails validation in a pay-per-lead program. - **Terms violations:** Bidding on your brand keywords, misleading claims, or other breaches of the [affiliate agreement](/glossary/affiliate-agreement/). ### How a Reversal Works Most programs run commissions through a holding period before they are approved for payout. A commission that is reversed during that window simply never gets paid. The affiliate sees it move from pending to reversed, usually with a reason attached. If the commission was already paid, the program has to recover the money. That is a **clawback**: the amount is deducted from the affiliate's next payout, or their balance goes negative until future commissions cover it. Clawbacks are unpopular and hard to enforce, which is the whole argument for a holding period that is at least as long as your refund window. ### Reversal vs. Clawback | | Reversal | Clawback | | --- | --- | --- | | When | Before the commission is paid | After it is paid | | Effect on affiliate | Pending amount disappears | Deducted from a future payout | | Friction | Low | High | ### Setting a Fair Reversal Policy - Match the holding period to your refund policy. A 30-day refund window means at least a 30-day hold. - State the policy in your agreement and on your affiliate landing page, so no one is surprised. - Show the reason. "Reversed: refunded on March 3" keeps trust; a silent disappearing commission does not. - Keep the record. A reversed commission should stay visible in the affiliate's history, not vanish. - Reverse partial refunds proportionally rather than cancelling the whole commission. ### Lead Reversals Programs that pay per lead reverse commissions when a lead turns out to be a duplicate, uses a disposable email, or fails a validation step. The same rules apply: hold, verify, then pay. ## Related Terms [Affiliate Commission An affiliate commission is the payment an affiliate earns for successfully driving a desired action—such as a sale, lead, or…](/glossary/affiliate-commission/) [Affiliate Payout An affiliate payout is the process of disbursing earned commissions to affiliate partners, typically on a set schedule and through a…](/glossary/affiliate-payout/) [Affiliate Fraud Affiliate fraud is any deceptive or illegitimate activity by affiliates or third parties to generate false clicks, leads, or sales in…](/glossary/affiliate-fraud/) [Attribution Window An attribution window is the defined time period after a user clicks an affiliate link during which any resulting conversion is credited…](/glossary/attribution-window/) [Cost Per Sale Cost per sale (CPS) is a pricing model where the affiliate earns a commission only when their referral results in a completed sale or…](/glossary/cost-per-sale/) ## How GrowSurf Helps GrowSurf commissions sit in a holding period you set before they are approved for payout, so a refund inside that window cancels the commission before any money moves. When your program tracks sales through Stripe, PayPal, Recurly, or Chargebee, GrowSurf detects refunds and chargebacks from those systems and adjusts the affected commissions on its own. Sales recorded through the REST API can be refunded through the API as well, which keeps your commission ledger in sync with your billing system. Affiliates see the status of every commission in their portal, with a tooltip explaining what pending, approved, paid, and reversed mean. ## Related Blog Posts ### [Top 5 Affiliate Software Tools in 2026 for Marketers](/blog/affiliate-software-tools/) Affiliate software tools make all the difference to a sophisticated, efficient and profitable affiliate marketing program. A reversal cancels a commission before it is paid, so the pending amount just goes away. A clawback recovers a commission that was already paid, usually by deducting it from the affiliate's next payout. #### How long should a commission holding period be? At least as long as your refund window. If customers can get a refund within 30 days, hold commissions for 30 days. Subscription businesses often hold until the first renewal. #### Can a reversed commission be reinstated? Yes, if the reversal was a mistake, for example a chargeback that was later won. Most programs handle this by approving the commission again or issuing a manual adjustment. #### Should affiliates be told when a commission is reversed? Yes. Show the reversal and the reason in their portal. Affiliates accept refunds as part of the business; they do not accept commissions that vanish without explanation. ## Unlock the power of word-of-mouth marketing and deepen your bond with customers Set up your refer a friend program with customer referral and affiliate program software that lowers your acquisition costs, increases customer loyalty, and saves you gobs of time.
