# Referral Funnel > A referral funnel tracks participants from joining to sharing to earning a reward. Learn the stages, the metric at each step, and where referrers stall. - URL: https://growsurf.com/glossary/referral-funnel/ --- [← View All Terms](/glossary/) A referral funnel is the sequence of steps a participant moves through in a referral program, from joining to sharing to earning a reward, with drop-off measured at each step. It shows where referrers stall so you can fix the weakest stage. Referral programs are usually judged on one number: how many referrals came in. That number hides everything that happened before it. A referral funnel breaks the journey into stages so you can see whether the problem is that nobody shares, nobody clicks, or nobody converts. ### The Stages 1. **Joins:** The customer becomes a participant, either by signing up or by being enrolled automatically. 2. **Opens the portal:** They actually look at their referral page or widget. 3. **Shares:** They copy their [referral link](/glossary/referral-link/) or share it through email or social channels. 4. **Gets a visit:** Someone clicks the link and lands on your page. 5. **Gets a lead:** The friend signs up or claims the offer. 6. **Gets a qualified referral:** The friend completes the qualifying action and the referral is credited. 7. **Earns a reward:** The referrer receives their first reward. Affiliate programs follow the same shape: approved, first click, first lead, first sale, first commission, payout set up. ### The Metric at Each Step | Stage | What to measure | | --- | --- | | Joins to opens | Participant activation: what share of participants ever open their portal | | Opens to shares | Share rate | | Shares to visits | Click-through per share, by channel | | Visits to leads | Landing page conversion | | Leads to qualified | Referral conversion rate | | Whole funnel | K-factor: referrals generated per participant | ### Reading the Funnel - **Many joins, few opens:** Participants do not know the program exists. Fix placement and announcement emails. - **Many opens, few shares:** The sharing copy or the reward is not compelling. Rewrite the message before touching the reward. - **Many shares, few visits:** The message is not landing with friends, or the channel is wrong. - **Many visits, few leads:** The [referral landing page](/glossary/referral-landing-page/) is not clear about the offer. - **Many leads, few qualified:** The friend's onboarding or the qualifying action is the bottleneck, not the referral program. ### Cohorts and Time Windows Measure each stage within a fixed window of joining, for example 7 or 30 days, and compare cohorts. Participants who joined in March should be judged against participants who joined in April, not against the all-time total. Cohorts also reveal whether a change, such as a new reward, actually moved the numbers. ## Related Terms [Activation Rate Activation rate is the percentage of new users who complete a key action or milestone that indicates they have experienced your product's…](/glossary/activation-rate/) [Referral Conversion Rate The referral conversion rate is the percentage of referred prospects who complete a desired action, such as signing up, making a purchase,…](/glossary/referral-conversion-rate/) [K-Factor The K-factor is a metric borrowed from epidemiology that measures virality in marketing and product growth. You can see who opened their portal, who copied or shared their link, whose link brought a first visitor, who got a first referral, and who earned a first reward. Activation is measured per enrollment cohort within a 7- or 30-day window, and it counts activity on the web and in native iOS and Android apps. If most participants open the portal and never share, the problem is your sharing copy, not your reward. Program analytics also break down impressions, participants, referrals, and shares by channel, so you can see which stage and which channel needs work. The Claim Offer Popup captures a referred friend's email the moment they arrive, which makes the middle of the funnel visible instead of a black box between click and signup. Everything is available in the dashboard and through the REST API. ## Related Blog Posts ### [4 Ways You Can Set Up Referral Tracking Today](/blog/referral-tracking-guide/) Referral tracking is the cornerstone of every successful referral program so it's important to plan out and set up, either manually or with referral software. ### [What's a Good Referral Rate? Join, open the portal, share the link, get a visit, get a lead, get a qualified referral, earn a reward. Each stage has its own drop-off, and the weakest one is where to focus. #### How is a referral funnel different from a sales funnel? A sales funnel follows a prospect from awareness to purchase. A referral funnel follows an existing customer from joining the program to successfully referring someone. The referred friend then enters your sales funnel. #### What is a good referral funnel conversion rate? It varies by industry and reward, so compare your own cohorts over time rather than a single benchmark. A useful starting question is what share of participants ever share their link; if that number is low, nothing further down the funnel matters yet. #### How often should I review the funnel? Monthly is enough for most programs. Review it immediately after any change to rewards, sharing copy, or placement so you can tell whether the change worked. ## Unlock the power of word-of-mouth marketing and deepen your bond with customers Set up your refer a friend program with customer referral and affiliate program software that lowers your acquisition costs, increases customer loyalty, and saves you gobs of time.
