Sub-Affiliate

A sub-affiliate is an affiliate who is recruited by another affiliate (the parent affiliate) and whose conversions generate commissions for both themselves and the parent affiliate who referred them.

A sub-affiliate is an affiliate partner who joins a program through the recruitment efforts of an existing affiliate, known as the parent affiliate or super affiliate. In a sub-affiliate arrangement, when the sub-affiliate generates conversions, they earn their standard commission, and the parent affiliate also receives a smaller commission—often called an override or second-tier commission—as a reward for recruiting and sometimes mentoring the sub-affiliate.

How Sub-Affiliate Programs Work

In a standard affiliate program, affiliates promote products directly to customers. In a sub-affiliate (or two-tier) program, affiliates can also recruit other affiliates. The parent affiliate receives a unique recruitment link that they share with potential affiliates. When someone joins the program through that link, they become a sub-affiliate linked to the parent.

Going forward, every time the sub-affiliate generates a sale, two commissions are paid: the sub-affiliate earns their regular commission (e.g., 20% of the sale), and the parent affiliate earns a smaller override commission (e.g., 5% of the sale). This creates a multi-level incentive structure that encourages affiliates to not only drive sales but also grow the program by recruiting new partners.

Sub-Affiliate vs. Multi-Level Marketing

  • Sub-affiliate programs: Typically have only two tiers (parent and sub-affiliate). Commissions are based on actual product sales. The structure is transparent and focused on driving real business results.
  • Multi-level marketing (MLM): Often involves many levels of recruitment with commissions flowing up multiple tiers. MLM structures can prioritize recruitment over product sales, which is a key distinction.

Legitimate sub-affiliate programs differ from MLM in that they focus on product sales rather than recruitment. The sub-affiliate earns commissions from selling products, and the parent affiliate earns a modest override—not a fee for recruiting alone.

Benefits of Sub-Affiliate Programs

Sub-affiliate structures offer several advantages. They incentivize your best affiliates to recruit new partners, which organically grows your program. Experienced affiliates who recruit sub-affiliates often mentor them, improving overall program performance. For the business, it creates a scalable recruitment engine that reduces the need for direct affiliate outreach.

Considerations and Challenges

Sub-affiliate programs add complexity to commission tracking and payouts. You need software that can handle multi-tier attribution and calculate overrides accurately. There is also a risk that parent affiliates may recruit low-quality sub-affiliates just to earn overrides. Setting minimum performance standards for sub-affiliates helps mitigate this.

Transparency is essential. Both parent affiliates and sub-affiliates should have clear visibility into how commissions are calculated and paid. Program terms should explicitly explain the sub-affiliate structure to prevent confusion.

FAQ

What is the difference between a sub-affiliate and a regular affiliate?

A regular affiliate promotes products directly to customers and earns commissions on their own sales. A sub-affiliate does the same, but they were recruited by a parent affiliate. The parent affiliate earns a smaller override commission on the sub-affiliate's conversions as a reward for recruiting them.

How much do parent affiliates earn from sub-affiliates?

Override commissions for parent affiliates are typically 5–10% of the sub-affiliate's earnings or a smaller percentage of the sale value. The exact rate varies by program and is designed to reward recruitment without significantly impacting the program's profitability.

Are sub-affiliate programs the same as MLM?

No. Sub-affiliate programs typically involve only two tiers and focus on product sales. MLM structures often have many recruitment levels and may prioritize recruitment over actual sales. Legitimate sub-affiliate programs are a standard, ethical practice in affiliate marketing.
