How to Track Referrals From Embeddables Flows

Add one Action to your Embeddable, and every referred respondent is credited to the person who referred them.

When a referred friend gives their email address in your Embeddables flow, GrowSurf can add them to your referral program and credit the person who sent them. An Embeddable runs right on your page, so an Embeddables Action can hand the email address straight to GrowSurf.

The tracking code goes into an Action inside Embeddables, not onto your page. The same setup works for an affiliate program. There, GrowSurf credits each lead to the affiliate who sent it.

The GrowSurf Universal Code must be installed on the page where your Embeddable is published. The installation steps in GrowSurf show you where to put it.

Integration Steps

Open the Embeddables setup in GrowSurf

In the Program Editor, go to Installation and continue to the step that asks how GrowSurf will know a referred friend signed up. Under Using a form builder? Prep your form first, click the Embeddables icon.

The Prep your form window opens with Embeddables selected. Keep it open while you work. It lists every step and holds the code you paste later.

Add a trigger for the moment you have the email address

In Embeddables, open the Embeddable that is published on your website. Open the Logic card, go to Triggers, and add a trigger that fires once the respondent has entered their email address, such as a click on the button that submits it.

Paste the GrowSurf code into an Action

On that trigger, create a new Action, name it “GrowSurf referral tracking”, and paste in the code from the Prep your form window. GrowSurf reads the email address from the User Data key email or email_address, or else from the one answer that is an email address. It reads the name from first_name and last_name, or a single full_name.

Click Save, open the Version Control card, select that version, and click Production.

Finish the installation

Back in GrowSurf, choose Programmatic as the way GrowSurf will know a referred friend signed up. Then finish the remaining installation steps.

Tips

Test it with a real referral link

Open your own referral link in a private browser window, then fill out the form. The new person should show up in GrowSurf as referred by you. Visiting the form directly does not add anyone, so test through a referral link.

Do not run it when the flow loads

A trigger on flow load fires before anyone has typed, so there is no email address to send. Tie the Action to the step where the email address is entered.

FAQ

Do I paste anything on my website?

Only the GrowSurf Universal Code. The tracking code lives in the Embeddables Action.

My email field is not called email. What do I do?

Usually nothing. GrowSurf also checks email_address and emailAddress, then uses the answer that is an email address if there is only one. If your flow asks for more than one email address, rename the respondent’s key to email, or nobody is added.

Will people who were not referred be added?

No. The code adds someone only when GrowSurf can tell who referred them. A visitor who found your Embeddables form on their own is not added to your program.
