How to Track Referrals From Tally Form Signups

Paste one GrowSurf code block next to your embedded Tally form, and every referred signup is credited to the person who referred them.

When a referred friend submits the Tally form on your website, GrowSurf can add them to your referral program and credit the person who sent them. Tally tells the page it sits on when someone finishes the form and passes along their answers. A GrowSurf code block on that page picks up the email address and name.

Nothing changes inside Tally, and you keep your current embed. The same setup works for an affiliate program. There, GrowSurf credits each lead to the affiliate who sent it.

The form must be embedded on your own website and must ask for an email address. The stand-alone tally.so link does not work.

Integration Steps

Open the Tally setup in GrowSurf

In the Program Editor, go to Installation and continue to the step that asks how GrowSurf will know a referred friend signed up. Under Using a form builder? Prep your form first, click the Tally icon.

The form builder icons sit under the question in Program Editor > 5. Installation.

The Prep your form window opens with Tally selected. Keep it open while you work. It lists every step and holds the code you paste later.

Check the form asks for an email address

In Tally, open the form that is embedded on your website. Make sure it has an email question. An email-type question works best, because GrowSurf looks for that first.

Paste the GrowSurf code next to your embed

Copy the code block from the Prep your form window and paste it on the page where your form is embedded, before the code that loads the form. When someone submits the form, the code reads their email address and name and adds them to your program.

If you serve your form from your own domain instead of tally.so, change TALLY_ORIGIN in the code block to match that domain.

Finish the installation

Back in GrowSurf, choose Programmatic as the way GrowSurf will know a referred friend signed up. Then finish the remaining installation steps.

Tips

Test it with a real referral link

Open your own referral link in a private browser window, then fill out the form. The new person should show up in GrowSurf as referred by you. Visiting the form directly does not add anyone, so test through a referral link.

Name your questions plainly

If the form has no email-type question, GrowSurf looks for a question with “email” in its wording. For names, it reads questions worded “First name” and “Last name”, or splits a single “Name” or “Full name” answer.

FAQ

Does this work on Tally’s free plan?

Yes. Embedding a form is a free Tally feature, and the GrowSurf code only needs the embed.

Do I need to change anything inside Tally?

No. Keep your form and your embed as they are.

Will people who were not referred be added?

No. The code adds someone only when GrowSurf can tell who referred them. A visitor who found your Tally form on their own is not added to your program.

Can another script on my page fake a signup?

No. The code accepts submissions only from Tally, so a message from anywhere else is ignored.
