How to Track Referrals From Typeform Signups

Send Typeform respondents to your thank-you page with their answers, and GrowSurf credits every referred signup to the person who referred them.

When a referred friend fills out the Typeform form on your website, GrowSurf can add them to your referral program and credit the person who sent them. Typeform sends the respondent to your thank-you page with their email address in the link, and a short GrowSurf code block on that page does the rest.

Your form stays where it is and looks the same. You add a redirect in Typeform and paste one code block on your thank-you page. The same setup works for an affiliate program. There, GrowSurf credits each lead to the affiliate who sent it.

You need a Typeform Plus plan or higher, and the form must be embedded on your own website. The stand-alone typeform.com link does not work.

Integration Steps

Open the Typeform setup in GrowSurf

In the Program Editor, go to Installation and continue to the step that asks how GrowSurf will know a referred friend signed up. Under Using a form builder? Prep your form first, click the Typeform icon.

The Prep your form window opens with Typeform selected. Keep it open while you work. It lists every step and holds the code you paste later.

Redirect the form to your thank-you page

In Typeform, open the form that is embedded on your website. Next to Endings, click + and choose Redirect to URL. Enter the address of your thank-you page. It must start with https://.

At the end of that address, type ?email=, then type @ and pick the question that asks for the email address. If the form asks for a full name, add &full_name= and pick that question the same way. Then publish your changes.

Paste the GrowSurf code on your thank-you page

Copy the code block from the Prep your form window and paste it anywhere on your thank-you page. When a respondent lands there, the code reads their email address and name from the link and adds them to your program.

Finish the installation

Back in GrowSurf, choose Programmatic as the way GrowSurf will know a referred friend signed up. Then finish the remaining installation steps.

Tips

Test it with a real referral link

Open your own referral link in a private browser window, then fill out the form. The new person should show up in GrowSurf as referred by you. Visiting the form directly does not add anyone, so test through a referral link.

Make the email question required

The code adds someone only when the link carries an email address. Make the email question required in Typeform so every submission has one.

Do I need a paid Typeform plan?

Yes. Redirecting respondents to your own page needs Typeform Plus or higher.

Can I use the typeform.com link instead of an embed?

No. The form must be embedded on your own website.

Will people who were not referred be added?

No. The code adds someone only when GrowSurf can tell who referred them. A visitor who found your Typeform form on their own is not added to your program.

Does the redirect open inside the embedded form?

No. By default, Typeform’s embed sends the whole page to your thank-you page.
